Here's what we've got for you in this month's newsletter:

  • Some announcements from us at the Chicago Audiomakers Collective
    • We're introducing the brand new Chicago Talent and Resource Directory (currently in beta)!
    • We've got a brand new Audio Events page and shared calendar
    • We're got a teaser of CAC's next in person event (mark your calendars for late July)
  • Notes from this months CAC zoom... (thank you Shaina for sharing your work!)
    • Plus, Jake Sorgen is looking for some occasional editing support, Annie Nazzaro is looking for tips and advice on live streaming audio, and Haleema Shah is looking for advice on where to get Zoom audio recorders repaired
  • Finally, some audio jobs in the Chicago area

Introducing: Chicago Talent and Resource Directory

Recently CAC co-hosted an event. At that event we asked people to add themselves and their companies to a new directory of Chicago audio talent and audio companies.

That list is now on the CAC website — and you can add yourself or your company!

Everyone is welcome to add themselves to the directory, or browse it and reach out to other people in the community. We want this to be a one-stop-shop for you to find new connections, and for anyone to find talent when staffing up their projects.

We're also working on similar list of tape-syncers, and places to rent equipment or a studio space. Respond to this email if you've got ideas for us to include.

We also want to emphasize that this directory is in beta and is DIY. It's not necessarily comprehensive, nor is it guaranteed to be perfect. If there's a feature you'd love to see added — let us know! Respond to this email or send us a message at ian@chiaudiocollective.com.

Introducing: Chicago Audio Events Page

As CAC grows, more people have contacted me about sharing upcoming events with our group. So, we now have a brand new events page, plus a public calendar you can subscribe to via iCal or Google Calendar! Anytime we hear about an audio adjacent event, it'll be added!

  • ICS Feed — copy this link and open your calendar app of choice. Find the option to subscribe to a calendar, and paste the link in.
  • Google Calendar — open this link and click "add to Google Calendar" in the bottom left (or click the same link in the embedded calendar below).

Our Next Event...

We can't share much right now, but we are planning another event for the Chicago audio community in collaboration with a legendary figure in the world of audio. It's going to be a celebration of short form audio and bold storytelling.

Also, it may involve some optional knitting... So, if you like audio, if you like knitting, or if you like audio and knitting — this event is for you! Plus, there will be plenty of time to meet and mingle. Mark your calendars for late July!

CAC's Monthly Call

Here's a rundown of what we covered in CAC's June call. If you want to join for future calls, check out our welcome page for info on times and how to join or subscribe to our calendar above.

Member Spotlight: Shaina Bauman

This month we did our second "CAC member spotlight". This series is inspired by The Qube's Podcast Salon series. Check out their next event on June 13th! This month we showcased the work of Shaina Bauman:

Shaina is a Senior Communications advisor at JSI, a global health and education nonprofit where she’s been for the last 8 years. Her career as a whole has focused on justice. She spent six months in Iraqi Kurdistan documenting the Kurdish Genocide, four months in Nairobi working on stories around migration, and a year at the NIH.

Check out Shaina's website here where you can find all four episode of Where the Heartland Is, and shoot her an email at shaina.k.bauman@gmail.com if you want to connect!

Announcements

We've also got a couple things to share with the group:

  • Jake Sorgen is looking to build a small roster of back up editors! He's looking for 2 or 3 people to help with occasional dialogue editing, audio restoration and cleanup, etc... Reach out to Jake at jakesorgen@gmail.com if you think you can help
  • Annie Nazzaro is looking for advice on how to ensure she has the best possible set up for streaming live audio. She'll likely be sending audio over Discord (but is open to suggestions) to a friend and co-streamer who will use her audio in a livestream. Reach out to Annie at anazzaro8@gmail.com if you have any suggestions!
  • Haleema Shah has some issues with her Zoom audio recorder which appears to be breaking down. If you have recommendations for shops or people who can diagnose and help repair the issue. Reach out to Haleema at hshah003@gmail.com if you have any suggestions!
  • A couple months ago I queried everyone for advice on how to deliver voice over. That advice was incredibly helpful and allowed me to deliver what I think is half decent VO as a guest host for a show I lead produce called Campus Files. Here's a link to the first part of the three part series I hosted. Thank you all for the help (check out these past meeting notes for advice on voice over)
